Veterans Got Talent!

More than 120 veterans gathered to share and expand their artistic talents last week at the National Veterans Creative Arts Festival (NVCAF) in Fayetteville, Ark. The weeklong event had workshops on everything from fly fishing to painting.
Sponsored by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), the American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) and Help Hospitalized Veterans (HHV), the event rewards juried competition winners in art, music, dance, drama and creative writing. All contestants must be veterans receiving VA care at a VA medical facility who have participated in the year-long arts competition by more than 3,000 veterans nationwide. This year the event was hosted by the Veterans Health Care System of the Ozarks in Fayetteville.
Some of the events are available to view online video. The event includes a live art exhibition and gala stage show that showcased creative work including singers, dancers and other performers. A live orchestra accompanied the performances. This year the presentations were held at the Walton Arts Center. Michael Peterson, a country music star, served as Master of Ceremonies for the stage show and opening observances.
The program is part of the VA’s recreation therapy programs that help residents and outpatient participants improve their physical and mental health through art therapies. The VA believes in healing both body and spirit to help veterans achieve a healthy lifestyle. The Arts Festival is part of a series of special programs designed by the VA to facilitate wellness including the National Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic, the National Veterans Golden Age Games, the National Veterans Wheelchair Games, the National Veterans TEE Tournament, the National Veterans Summer Sports Clinic.
