Program brings together U.S. veterans and abandoned dogs for mutual benefit

A program known as Veterans & Shelter Dogs is working to unite dogs and veterans in need in an attempt to improve the conditions of both.

The Kansas City Star reported that the program was originated after a study by the Research Center for Human/Animal Interaction at the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Missouri revealed the benefits of pairing abandoned dogs with people in need.

Veterans returning from overseas can tend to suffer from a variety of mental disorders that are often eased with the unconditional love and companionship of man’s best friend.

Rebecca Johnson, lead researcher of the veterans dog project told the new source, “Many veterans are never diagnosed.”  Johnson went on to say, “They suffer quietly on their own in their community. The Veterans Administration estimates that 19 percent of the vets who come home from these wars come with some degree of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.”

Patriot PAWS is a similar program that offers trained dogs as a veterans benefit to disabled servicemembers at no cost to them.  According to the organization’s website, Patriot PAWS not-for-profit mission is funded with donations to offset the expense associated with the animals’ training.
