VA benefits extended to vets regardless of where injured

In a recent announcement by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, veterans benefits for injured servicemembers will be offered regardless of where their injuries happened.
Beginning October 1, 2011, military veterans with certain injuries suffered between October 7, 2001, and November 30, 2005, may qualify for retroactive traumatic injury benefits through the Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance Traumatic Injury Protection (TSGLI) benefit.
In a statement, VA secretary Eric Shinseki says, “Now all of our nation’s servicemembers who suffered severe traumatic injuries while serving their country can receive the same traumatic injury benefits, regardless of where their injury occurred.” Shinseki went on to say, “We at VA appreciate the efforts of Congress and the president to improve benefits for our troops.”
Many may remember that Congress passed the Veterans’ Benefits Improvement Act of 2010. The law removed the requirement that benefit eligibility was conditional based on the injury occurring in Operations Enduring Freedom or Iraqi Freedom. Injuries that were sustained anywhere are now considered TSGLI-eligible.
TSGLI pays injured vets between $25,000 and $100,000 for traumatic injuries resulting in amputations, paralysis, loss of sight, hearing, speech and more.
