Update on Military Discounts

Written by Angela Caban,
In the 7 years that I have been a military spouse, I have learned that asking retailers and businesses if they offer military discounts, has saved us thousands of dollars. So why aren’t you doing the same? I know many military servicemembers and spouses that don’t ask, and they are truly missing out on some great deals and discounts that are rightfully theirs.
A bit about military discounts — most of the regular discounts, the standard percentage off for military that is always in effect, are rarely advertised. Not even a sticker at the register is advertised that they honor military discounts. Here is an example; I was shopping at Home Dept with my husband spending well over $400 on paint and household items. Not even thinking about asking for a discount, the cashier saw my military ID in my wallet and said “Don’t you know we give 10% off for military”? I couldn’t believe that because of my assumptions we almost missed out on saving over $40! And from that day forward I ask everywhere we go. Even if you know they don’t, ask. Things change and many times a store will honor it anyway.
Another great way to save is online shopping. I noticed that even though stores don’t offer military discounts in the store, many offer it online. So many times if you know what you wish to purchase, save yourself the money and go online. And another great perk is that many websites offer free shipping as well, talk about major savings! So if you carry your military I.D. with you, why not ask? What you are missing out on is saving money, and let’s face it; we could all use a good savings nowadays. I call my military I.D. a “constant coupon”.
And don’t hesitate to check online for discounts and deals being added daily. Check out the Military.com Deals for updates and new promotions.
