For many Americans, Memorial Day represents a long three-day weekend, barbecues, a trip down the shore or just lounging outside with a drink. But to many, it means so much more than just that. As you enjoy this long weekend, take a moment to think why we celebrate this holiday. Memorial Day is more than an “extra” day off from work, this is a day when we Americans should take the time to reflect back on the lives lost throughout the many U.S. wars and honor all war veterans. This is a national day of mourning, but we should also take the time to celebrate the life of the Unites States soldier, all they risk for our freedom and their bravery and sacrifices.
Memorial Day, is classified as the day that we recognize those who fought, but most importantly lost their lives in the Civil War. But we now consider this holiday as a tribute to those who have fought in all U.S. wars. On this day, Americans are asked to pause for a minute of silence at 3 p.m, to honor those who have died while serving the United States. All over the country you will find Memorial Day events, tributes, concerts and parades. But to me the simpler way to show your thanks and honor Memorial Day is by visiting a cemetery or memorial.
So whether you choose to honor this day with family or alone, remember the ongoing lesson for the future. Speak to your children about Memorial Day and what it means to America. Children are the future and they only ones who will keep tradition and legacy going.
Taps is a piece of music in which was composed by General Daniel Butterfield, during the Civil War. Taps is played to honor America’s fallen soldiers. This call is played on a bugle, and is played at funerals and memorial services to mark the end of the soldier’s day.
Fading light dims the sight,
And a star gems the sky, gleaming bright.
From afar drawing nigh. Falls the night.
Day is done, gone the sun,
From the lake, from the hills, from the sky.
All is well, safely rest. God is nigh.
Then good night, peaceful night,
Till the light of the dawn shineth bright,
God is near, do not fear. Friend, good night.
To all our soldiers, both past and present, thank you and God Bless.
How will you honor our soldiers this Memorial Day?
