Turnover of the Sons of Iraq to the Iraq Government

September 22nd, 2008  |  Published in Military News

Who are the Sons of Iraq?  To help educate society about what’s going in our World I feel we need to briefly explain who the son of Iraq are for people who do not follow the political news as closely as others do.  The Sons of Iraq are coalitions between tribal Sheikhs in a particular providence in Iraq that unite to ensure security.

The movement started among Sunni tribes in Anbar Province to become an ad-hoc armed force across the country in less than a year. The rapid growth of the US-funded groups has led to concerns about some of their members’ insurgent pasts fighting against coalition forces.

Iraq Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki has feared the US-armed ‘concerned local citizens’ are an armed Sunni opposition in the making, and has argued that such groups should be under the command of the Iraqi Army or police.

The Iraqi Defense Ministry has said that it plans to disband the Awakening groups so they do not become a separate military force. The Iraqi government plans to absorb approximately 25% of the Awakening groups in to security service or the military, but analysts fear what will happen to the remaining 75% of them. Some experts warn there are similarities between the awakening councils and armed groups in past conflicts that were used for short-term military gains but ended up being roadblocks for state building.

Currently, public attention has been focused on Shiite-vs.-Shiite fighting in Basra and Baghdad, U.S. military leaders are taking a cold second look at the future intentions of the roughly 90,000 “Sons of Iraq” — the locally recruited and primarily Sunni security forces that are armed and supported by the United States at $300 per person each month.   Over the past eighteen months, U.S. forces in Iraq have paid more than 100,000 militiamen — many of these men are ex- insurgents themselves.

Honestly, I’m starting to get and because we are taking money out of our country, (we are in a recession remember) and we are funding money to other country promoting violence to a war that has be going on since the beginning of time!  These countries have been fighting thousands of years and if the president and his staff think we are going to solve this problem by sending our soldiers out in a matter of a few years than they got something else coming.  Our country needs us were in trouble.  Everyone is struggling to make ends meat.  Let us get our priorities in gear!

The Sons of Iraq are created evenly. Recently, in Diyala, the local Sons of Iraq groups have split in two. “One is a tribally based. They are associated with rural areas.  There goal is to protect their villages.

The other half, which he described as “the politically based ones,” are in Baqubah, the province’s main city of about 300,000, which less than a year ago was considered an al-Qaeda-driven battleground.  This is scary.  Nothing good is going to happen.  I smell danger, destruction and death.  It is time to get our boys home to the good old USA.

The Sons of Iraq came from the 1920s Revolutionary Brigade, which earlier had been responsible not only for killing American soldiers but also for kidnapping a U.S. Marine. Others are from Hamas in Iraq, a Sunni insurgent faction that had broken away from the 1920s Brigade. There are some from mujaheddin made up of former Saddam Hussein loyalists.

The big question that many American want answers to is, “what happens to the Sons of Iraq in the long run?”  Are they eventually going to end any time soon?  Not on your life!  This is something that because a family thing, just like gangs the grandfather was in it, now the father and soon the son will get involved.  It is never going to end.  This is a useless war.  The only solution is to get out will you can, bring our hero’s home.   How long are we going to let this go on for?
