New legislation deals with veterans unemployment

October 26th, 2011  |  Published in Veteran Benefits

Unemployed veterans are the latest buzz among U.S. House of Representatives, which recently passed six pieces of legislation aimed at helping former military members gain job training and placement, as well as other assistance, through improved Veterans benefits.

The Veterans Opportunity to Work Act of 2011 is just one of the several key pieces of legislation that was recently passed to help counteract the rising unemployment figures from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.  The report indicated a nationwide increase in joblessness from 7.7 to 8.1 percent, with veterans among those without work.

Rep. Jeff Miller, chairman of the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs says, “The House of Representatives sent a clear message that not only is support for our veterans strong, but that we stand together to end veteran unemployment,”

Just because the legislations passed doesn’t mean that all Democrats are sold on it. Rep. Bob Filner of California indicated that the bill is encouraging in that it could help in allowing veterans who are employed keep their current jobs, but it may fall short in helping those veterans who are unemployed find sustainable jobs.

The next hurdle for all six pieces of legislation is passing the Senate.
