At Ground Zero Absence has a Big Presence
September 13th, 2011 | Published in Military News
Water falls over the square footprints of absent buildings in a moving memorial to the two Twin Towers destroyed a decade ago Sunday. Bronze parapets inscribed with the 2,983 people who lost their lives that day at all three sites, lines the edges. Over 400 swamp white oak trees will eventually create an urban grove, but the most people will want to take a few moments to find a Callery pear tree rescued from the ruins and nursed back to health before being replanted. The area around the buildings is “thriving” according to an Associated Press article by Leanne Italie, who reports that new restaurants, shops, hotels and living accommodations have filled in the blank spaces in lower Manhattan. Still, she says, people find a way to pay their respects. Nearby St. Paul’s Chapel displays a mound of uniform patches from firefighters who want to show their solidarity with the many fallen heroes who gave and are still giving their lives after the attack. There is no charge to view the site, but timed tickets are mandatory and can be secured at www.911memorial.org. The site is open to the public beginning Monday, September 12, 2012. Over 250,000 passes have already been given out.
